High visibility apparel is made to stand out in various environment helping to keep the user seen, and ultimately safe, from various moving vehicles, especially in low-light situations. Retroreflective Tape For High Visibility Apparel They work like the glass beads but are more efficient, thus creating a brighter return of light. Prismatic reflective surfaces do the same thing but with sharp angles like prisms. The rounded shape of the beads is what creates the retro reflectivity. Glass bead reflective surfaces use glass spheres to collect light and bounce it back to the source. There are two basic types of retroreflective surfaces: glass bead surfaces and prismatic surfaces and both reflect light differently. Now, in the instance of retroreflective, light travels in and back out, to and from the same point. See the example below: What Does Retroreflective Mean? The ball would bounce back, but at an angle opposite of what it came to the wall. To explain this a little bit better, if you think back to when you were a kid and threw a ball against the wall. With high visibility clothing, this wouldn’t be a good use for protecting workers. The mirror is reflective, as it sends light out in different directions, depending on the angle of entrance. So let’s come back to our mirror example for a moment.

” When it comes to reflective tape, it is defined as returning the light back to where it originally came from. To understand what “Retro” is, let’s look at a definition: “… denoting action that is directed backward. Where a retroreflective surface is like the reflector you would find on something simple, like a bike reflector. When you think of reflective, think of a mirror. What exactly is the difference between these two? The biggest clue is the word “retro” which helps us to know and understand the difference between these two reflective surfaces. We’re talking about reflective and retroreflective tape. Lastly, my last reflector went on the left-back side of the camera to get some highlight on the side of the the camera and also some highlights on the left side of the lens hood. It’s time to talk about two similar terms causing a lot of confusion in the workplace when it comes to outfitting workers in the appropriate visibility workwear. To get some “catchlights” on the lens, I carefully placed a reflector in front of the camera and angled it so that I got some nice catchlights and a little bit fill light on the lens itself. I placed another one just beside the camera to get some highlight near the shutter and and more fill on the grip.

I placed a DIY reflector on the opposite side of the softbox to fill in the shadows. If you have excess foil or wrapper on the sides, just cut it away. If you only have good old regular tape, fold the aluminium to the back of the board and tape it. If you have double stick tape you can just put double stick tape on the board and stick the aluminum foil to it. I used aluminium foil before but have used silver gift wrapping paper when I had non available (don’t ask). I make mine quite small because I mostly use them for my still life photography.Ĭut a bigger piece of aluminium foil or silver gift wrapping paper.
